Because it's bad enough that I make the betas public, and end up having to support intermediate versions of zlib that people put into production despite their beta status.  If I provide a git repository, they can make up their own versions with selected patches and I'd have to support all 2^n of those intermediate versions!

        It has not worked out all that badly with libpng.

        I haven't noticed people putting betas in production.

        The main complaint that I have is that very few people
        even look at or test the betas and rc's.

        I've been maintaining a git repository for about a year.
        It looks as though about 20 people are actively following
        it, but only one or two have made bug reports against
        the git versions.

        I personally regard the git repository as just another
        output format in addition to the tarballs, but the
        updates are more frequent, usually up to about 5,
        sometimes up to 10, updates per tarball-release.  It's
        definitely more work to maintain a git repo than simply
        issuing tarballs.
