We got it fixed on the second try with a new Makefile.in.  I had to  
go back to the old-school .SUFFIXES Makefile directive.  I have  
attached the new Makefile (since I'm too lazy to release a whole new  
beta just for this).  If you run into a problem with the shared (.lo)  
object files not being made, please try the attached Makefile.in.
