Someone contributed similarly to libpng a while ago, and then disappeared.
It was about 6 months of agony getting it working right this past spring, but
it does work fine now.  John  Bowler did a lot of the work--I don't know if he
is on this list though.  It added around 100k to the gzipped/bzipped distributions.
