I don't know whether it works natively on Windows with MSYS,
but ./configure does work quite well when _cross-compiling_
for Windows. I upgraded the mingw-cross-env project to use
zlib-1.2.4.

However, there's currently the limitation that it only
works for static builds. You can't build a DLL file with
"./configure && make"  yet. Some time ago I posted some
more information about that topic to this mailing list.
