Fine on gentoo, but on MinGW it still zaps the shared library build; "LDSHARED" has to be set explicitly in the MINGW* case (exactly as the '*' case).  If I copy that line back in all three batches of "make test" tests pass, and the shared library test does report zlib 1.2.4.1
