No, please DO NOT bring us into autoconf hell!

We could add a bit more platform detection logic into ./configure
to get rid of the separate Makefiles.

Oh, BTW, if we had a good VCS, we could put the stuff for certain
unpopular targets into their own branches ... ;-o

You're talking about the tools, like minigzip, etc ?
I'd rather prefer moving them to their own packages.
