Enrico,

If you define OLD_GZIO, then the old gz* functions in gzio.c are used.   Otherwise, the new gz* functions are used.  My plan is to remove gzio.c for the 1.2.4 release.

In other news, the author of libxml will be immediately applying and pushing a patch to fix the problem.  We will be left with the problem that if zlib is updated to 1.2.4 on a system, but libxml is not updated (where both are linked dynamically, which is usually the case), then libxml will crash.  On the other hand, this will be detected pretty quickly, prompting an update to libxml.
