I guess I don't know what output you're talking about.  The output or ar, nm, and ranlib are never displayed by ./configure.

A quick look shows that in addition to installation of zlib.pc: installation of zlib.3 and distclean.  There's probably other stuff.  Someone sent an email recently about what was missing.
