Because it's bad enough that I make the betas public, and end up having to support intermediate versions of zlib that people put into production despite their beta status.  If I provide a git repository, they can make up their own versions with selected patches and I'd have to support all 2^n of those intermediate versions!

So I'd rather retain a modicum of control over the number of zlib versions out in the wild.
