For this one on Solaris 10 using gcc the symbol visibility is enabled, but I am getting a slew of warnings:

    warning: visibility attribute not supported in this configuration; ignored

I am temporarily solving this by using the no output test instead of the zero status test for hidden attributes, which avoids the warnings by not accruing that benefit on Solaris.
