The problem is: autoconf allows that, but lacks any syntactic
seclusion whatsoever (not even mentioning sematic one). So it's
error-prone and nearly undebuggable from ground up.

Actually, I never would have used m4 in the first place, but
instead built everything on a clearly defined set of shell 
functions.
