Perhaps we could add a new ./configure option for that ?
(eg: --asm=i686 or --enable-asm-i686, ...)

I haven't tested it yet, since it's currently not used by the
build process. All my testings run on an fully-automated build
engine, which doesnt do esoteric things like copying-over certain
files before calling package's buildscripts ... 
(i'm not debian ;-p)
