I built and linked (using the contrib\vstudio\vc8 solution) the x64
targets with no issues on VS2005 + Service Pack 1.  I did have to
tweak the contrib projects to generate and embed the CRT manifests in
order to run the tests.

The contrib/vstudio/readme.txt has some instructions for using the
PSDK compiler since VS2005 was in beta at the time, but that does not
seem to be necessary any more.
