"make test" works fine on

  Solaris 10 + Sun C compiler 5.8 
  Solaris 10 + gcc 3.4.3          
  AIX 5.2 + AIX C compiler 6      
  RedHat E3 + gcc 3.4.3
  RedHat E3 + gcc 2.96
