Yes, it could.  However that's lower on my priority list than, for  
example, incorporating a better compression method like LZMA2.

By the way, I heard from Jean-loup for the first time in about a  
year!  He's getting a job at Google and he might have some time to  
contribute to gzip and zlib.  Perhaps he could work on deflate ...
